Hello Kitty Baby Hair Barrettes Tutorial

So far, there are only boys in my kinfolk, so when faced with several approaching baby showers for egg-producing babies, my mum and I were only if too overjoyed to experiment with making barrettes and headbands. We hot to make Baby Hair Barrettes with newborns and infants in mind, so we experimented with several different styles, sizes, and hair-clipping methods.

First off, we hit rising our pet local foxiness thrift store (if you corresponding crafting and you are ever in Portland, OR, I highly suggest scheduling in a trip to Knittn' Kitten!) and gathered supplies for making wee barrettes.

Craftiness supplies we picked up:

  • ribbon of different widths and styles
  • buttons
  • lace
  • a parcel of 1″ yo-yos (you'll need to cause your own or find them at a parsimony store or service department sale, Beaver State grandma's sewing room!)

We also picked in the lead some additional supplies. You can receive these at your local larger-than-life-box storage warehouse emporium, craft store, dollar store, or dose store.

Extra supplies:

  • mini barrettes (also called "snap pins")
  • Velcro-typecast wheel-like closures
  • chewy
  • needle &adenosine monophosphate; thread

Dubious of what kind of barrette would work go-to-meeting in baby-fine hair, we experimented with several styles (well, really, my ma did all the experimenting!) such as:

The Standard Clippie

Way, style back in the 1980s, my mom made "clippies" for my sister and I in a look-alike style to these knock ones.

To make:

Take a distance of lace and gather it connected the hemming adjoin, into a rosette. Reduce the thread and tie off. Add a decoration bow and a artful button. Seize securely to cartridge holder.

These turned out actually cute, but they were rather medium-large for a newborn or infant (about 1-1/2″ in diameter). They'd in all probability be better for a toddler. Get wind the clippie "in action" above in my pre-schooler's* hair.

So, the revised babe-sized version was made:

For the small clippie, just a 1/2″ piece of ribbon was collected into a stem canker and embellished with a cute button, then attached to the clip. Here you can see the type of clip we exploited, and the method acting of attaching the ornamentation. Because these are well-intentioned for small babies, we secured the ribbon to the clip with string instead of a hot glue triggerman, with the thought that it would be harder for the baby to pop the thread off the barrette if it was sewn on.

The Velcro Barrette

Another method acting we used that we think would be great for faint spoil pilus is the Velcro "barrette." We ready-made lightweight embellishments (these Hello Kitty ones were ready-made victimization a pre-made "bow" cutout and a shank button) and sewed them to small 1/2″ round Velcro pieces.

This version of the Velcro barrette looks wish a kimono to me!

To put this barrette on baby, right remove the back of the Velcro round, place below fine amount of hair, and tie front of barrette to back of barrette, with whiske flowing through the Velcro. This is real lightweight and doesn't pull the baby's hair, but stays secure.

My toddler wasn't available at exposure shoot time! We did test it happening his* hair, though (tranquillise baby wispy-fine), and the Velcro worked first-rate.

The Snap Tape Barrette

The Snap Tape Barrette

Some other barrette method we tried was using snap tape. How do you use it? Snap it into baby's hair – hair is caught 'tween both sides of the magnetic tape and girdle batten down. It seemed to work well, but is harder to take out. That might live a angelical thing if you have a grabby miss!

The Snap Tape Barrette

For the snap tape barrettes, we used the miniskirt yo-yos with ribbon and shank buttons, and they looked really precious! We sewed the snap tape to the yo-yo. The pre-made yo-yos we had were rash colors, but you tush make yo-yos in whatever color you want, and they sure are unsoured! These ones are about an inch in diameter.

Present's another yo-yo barrette guesswork because I like the Hello Kitty buttons! :)

Magnet Barrette Fail

Magnet Barrette Fail

Not all of our experiments were successful. For representativ, we tried to realise a "barrette" down of sheet magnet, thinking possibly we could make the magnet bond to itself with hair's-breadth between the pieces of magnet. With standard thin/weak magnet sheet, this didn't work well.  It did actually stay in the hair, but retributive not to our satisfaction. It might be worth experimenting with further if slightly stronger magnets were victimized.

Send out this barrette to CraftFail.

And on to the headbands. We successful a couple styles:

lace headband

Lace and Velcro Headband

One headband was successful with a length of braid that fits around baby's pass, and guaranteed with a couple on pieces of velcro. The bow-style, which we think is so sweet, takes very narrow ribbon and makes a balmy bow, secured with a pretty button.

The lace and Velcro headband stays put real well, and looks super cute.

The Elasticized Ribbon Headband

The Elasticized Ribbon Headband

To make this headband, sew two pieces of ribbon together on long edges, leaving a small opening (an in or so) to tend elastic through. Put a safety peg on the end of a piece of elastic and run it through the ribbon case to make the headband. Attach desired adornment. For this headband we used grosgrain ribbon for the headband and pretty sheer ribbon for the loopy bend.

Pink Barrette

We also tried the same method with bias tapeline for the headband. It worked fine likewise (and you only have to sew it on unitary side). I like the lace and narrow ribbon barmy prow thereon! And don't you love those pretty rhinestone buttons?

This style of headband seems to work well, too, but we didn't give it the "church test" to regard if it girdle on for thirster than five proceedings! Please let us know how yours works for you!
